Mining ships are filled with mono-atomic particles, very much like grain silos, and should be subject to the same detonation potential. Firing a weapon at a mining ship should have a chance of detonating the ore resulting in an explosion equal to the amount and type of ore the ship is carrying. |

I thought the mining process gathered the ore a molecule at a time as opposed to 'clumps' , so perhaps I used a wrong term there. And I think it is a great idea for mining ships to explode with enough force to destroy/cripple their attacker. |

Yes, this could be MUCH more fun for everybody. For the suiciders the Hulk could take them out and no need to wait for Concord - the Hulk pilots get a Kill added to their record. I see it as a win/win. |

I seriously doubt that the game will 'break' without miners. A well engineered game does not require all aspects of game-play to be performed for the game to function properly. Sure miners keep things cheaper, but if every miner disappeared today there would still be minerals available for manufacture of new items. My Opinion as a Miner. What kind of game would it be if there were ONLY miners and mission runners, if these war fleets that blot out the stars did not exist, hmmm, I wonder... Seems like it is just what the game was designed for, massive user co-operation. It makes mining a seasonal activity, like farming. January thru March is winter for the miner. Time to do research or play the market or go into production. The players are shaping the game as much as the game is shaping the players, and that is a good thing. I am almost 7 months into the game. I tried most of the other games first. For me, EVE is the most challenging and satisfying game I have played thus far, precisely because it is hard, challenging, has a steep learning and investment curve. EVE is not for the casual player, there are no children here, EVE is for the dedicated player who wants more from a game. Honestly, if EVE had not kicked my arse during the trial then I never would have paid for it, much less still be here and now deeply involved. I would hope that you are still here in the future after finding your way through the fog of being new.
EDIT: I am a dedicated miner, I avoid combat. "I don't want barges to have a viable tank, because I want to gank those when hulkagaddon rolls by in half a month." See? Doesn't telling the truth make you feel better? --áGoose99 |

Yeah. That's pretty much the case.
It's the old Opportunity Cost deal.
What have you sacrificed by doing what you did - instead of the things you didn't do?
For someone who is well established and making a lot of money through manufacturing - a key to their making more - is their playing time. For them - to spend their time out mining raw ore instead of managing their businesses - is a misuse of their time. Most of them started off mining - but as their manufacturing and trading interests came to dominate their business - they spent less and less time doing it.
For newer people starting out - they don't really have anything better to do with their time - (assuming they're going to be industrialists) so mining is a good use of their time.
One thing to remember about Industrialists - is that most of the larger ones are Traders too. They care how much they make off their goods. So - they aren't just industrialists - they're running a business and may well have a lot of things on their plate, managing their orders, their Planets, their research agents, etc. They may also be running missions for standings.
Here though - we are often, if not usually, talking about Players rather than Characters. Most of these guys probably have multiple accounts, the better to run more jobs and manage more planets.
Some of them still mine now and again - because they like doing it - but the bulk of their materials often come from the market. Others may have sold off their mining fleets and now rely entirely on the market.
In any case - there isn't any one way to do this and you have people at all different stages of their careers - so what's true for some may not be true for others - and what might well be the smart move for one person - may be a mistake for someone else.
I don't know if anyone has ever done an accurate survey of how much of the mineral market comes from reprocessed loot and how much from mining but it would be interesting to see. I'm not sure where you could get accurate information on that though - unless you were CCP.
*shrug*
.
Yes, exactly the path I plan to follow. At 7 months into my only character - I am a dedicated mission miner, I no longer mine for myself since it is more profitable to spend loyalty points. I have risen faster and farther running missions than hunting free-range rocks. I see another 5 months at least running mining missions before I have skilled up enough to go into research so that I can eventually produce items not currently available on the market. However I will most likely always do some mining. And honestly, without hulkisissydom to spur me along I might still be stupidly shooting rocks. This whole en devour has actually made me round out my characters skills and made me a better player, as I never would have come up with mining from a battleship on my own.
People spend years building their characters, it would be stupid of them to abandon the game over this event. And this being the fifth year of this event, if it were detrimental to the game then it would have been stopped by now. Anybody able to be scared off by hulkisissydom is already too fragile of a player for EVE and should run screaming before they spend any more time/money on this game. I plan to eventually do it all-on-one. Though I have inferred that there is some advantage to having an alt in control of your personal corporation. I sandbox and mission, as I skill up. I honestly do not understand the people who are here only to battle, and at first that is all I thought hulkisissydom was all about. But I have come to understand that it is a needed splash in the pond, lest the game become too placid. Now that I am decently skilled in a battleship, as a result of the upcoming event, I feel more confident to take on more aspects of the game. And that, I think, is the point of this thread that has been drifted away from. Very soon now some sleepy players are going to be awakened to the realities of the game they have chosen to play in, and this thread is the forewarning, should they choose to head it. I for one, am looking forward to it, perhaps not this year, but definitely next year, I plan to survive in a Hulk through several engagements so that I can post pics in the forums.

So I wondered what it really was like during Hulkisissydom, so I took my battleship into progressively lower security space to see what would happen, took me days of running low security mining mission before somebody actually took me on, and then it was taking so long for him to kill me that I just logged off and came back a few hours later to find my pod still there, had to fly back on auto pilot through at least 8 low sec systems before somebody killed me. One Billion ISK well spent, most pilots that came into my mining mission locations turned tail and ran when they found my battleship mining. My conclusion is that most participants of Hulkisissydom are cowards who run from a little bit of resistance. I laugh out loud and feel quite safe now. Well aren't we the little firebug today. Please DO re-read my posts, I am in favor of the event, and rather disappointed that it is not happening. I am truly interested to hear from Boson as to the status of the event, and wish for a reply so much that I am willing to profess a taunt or two.
You however are just trying to stir up controversy. Please DO find quotes from me where I say that I am in favor of the event, and post links to them.
However I can understand that perhaps you too are upset that the event is NOT taking place, and you lashed out at me in frustration, that is ok with me, let it all out dear, there there, it will all be ok soon now... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_and_spirit_of_the_law
"The letter of the law versus the spirit of the law is an idiomatic antithesis. When one obeys the letter of the law but not the spirit, one is obeying the literal interpretation of the words (the "letter") of the law, but not the intent of those who wrote the law. Conversely, when one obeys the spirit of the law but not the letter, one is doing what the authors of the law intended, though not necessarily adhering to the literal wording. "Law" originally referred to legislative statute, but in the idiom may refer to any kind of rule. Intentionally following the letter of the law but not the spirit may be accomplished through exploiting technicalities, loopholes, and ambiguous language. Following the letter of the law but not the spirit is also a tactic used by oppressive governments."
Just to put you in your place...
I post within the 'spirit' of the forums, a few jesting remarks within the overwhelmingly positive body of words I have contributed to the forum. I have no enemies here, I have engaged in no spats. ANY forum member can have any one of their posts over-analyzed and found in abeyance of the letter of the law - while still within the spirit.

I wonder about a thread listing evil quotes of things players say to each other in-game chat and in-game mail. What I said was SO mild that it might be considered a compliment in comparison. In fact I might just be inspired to have Google help me in searching the forums for off-color remarks. Think I would be surprised at who said them to who under what circumstances? If we REALLY want to enact the Politically Correct Police Squad, then I think that a lot of posters would be banned for innocuous remarks. Do you REALLY want to go there for little ol me? It is a real shame that Boson took himself out of the picture, I was looking quite forward to an organised event that I could learn from. I was just a defenseless miner before all this started, and now my ship is named 'Hot Drop Bait', in anticipation of being attacked just for being a miner. Now I got skills and equipment to give the griefers a good run for their ISK - and no event happened. I am shocked - I expected to be hunted down and mercilessly killed repeatedly. I expected that the use of 'Carebear' in my name would make my death a coveted one among the griefers, I had tears ready and EVERYTHING !?!
Sigh, so now my time is spent skilling up for playing the ISK market, if mining is not going to be the fun it promised to be, then perhaps I will find some excitement in the ISK market.
(Note to self; when organizing a game-wide event to NOT frack off the game developers.)
